GKN Aerospace, a multi-technology tier 1 aerospace supplier, has unveiled a new hydrophobic coating designed for flight deck windows. Currently being showcased at the Farnborough International Airshow, the new product is a permanent surface treatment that provides in-flight and ground operation rain shedding, along with improving resistance to surface abrasion.
Holding promise across a variety of scenarios involving ice and rainy conditions, GK Aerospace’s new product is currently undergoing performance assessment by Airbus, who is testing the coating on its flight-test aircraft.
Applied once in the window’s lifetime, the new coating far outpaces current hydrophobic technologies that typically offer temporary protection that requires repeat applications.
Commenting on the coating, Gavin Wesson, CEO GKN Aerospace Special Products business explained: “Our new hydrophobic technology proves to be a unique solution that seamlessly fits the demand of our transparencies customers for less maintenance and reduced weight and costs.
“In our view, this technology potentially eliminates the need for windscreen wipers on cockpit windows. It is great that we can further assess this innovative product together with one of our major customers Airbus.”
GKN Aerospace is showcasing its latest products and highlighting its most recent developments at the Farnborough International Airshow 2018 that is running from the 16 – 22 July 2018.
