An hour after taking off from Moscow, Ural Airlines flight U6-893 was forced to declare a medical emergency and land in Volgograd, Russia, after passengers on board began to display symptoms of poisoning.
Passengers who were seated in rows 21 through 26, began to report shortness of breath and in certain cases displayed a green pigmentation of their skin.
The flight, which was headed to Dubai, was carrying 150 passengers.
Ilya Brinder, a passenger who was on the flight, told TV360: “All of them had greatly dilated pupils. They were suffocating. The flight attendants were in a panic, and the aircraft captain decided to make an emergency landing in Volgograd.”
According to airport officials, after landing in Volgograd, the plane was met by emergency medical crews on the tarmac. At least two people were taken off the plane and taken to a local hospital, while several others were treated by paramedics at the scene.
The aircraft and its passengers were searched and checked by security officials, who later cleared the flight to continue on its original flight plan. Flight U6-893 landed safely in Dubai at 03:23.
While an official explanation of what caused the incident has yet to be issued, the initial speculation points to food poisoning as being the likely cause.
