Cinematographers, DoPs and film making professionals in the region got their first look at the eagerly anticipated new Sony VENICE camera at an event in Dubai. The “An evening with Venice,” event organised by Sony MEA was held on March 15, and held at Dubai Production City. The aim of the camera showcase event was to introduce the next generation camera of the CineAlta line in the Middle East.

Sony is regionally launching their much-awaited full frame cinema camera as a new generation of the CineAlta line. The Venice was first announced in September 2017 at the IBC conference and started shipping in February 2018 at a retail price of around $48,000.

Invitees were treated to a screening of the trailer of 'The Dig,' an upcoming major motion picture and the first to be shot with the new Venice camera. Also screened was a behind the scenes look at the production with interviews with Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC and other crew members who worked on the film. “The Dig” functions as an ideal proof of concept for Venice, as the film production tested the camera’s features and architecture in different environments and lighting conditions.

Sony are heavily focusing on the rugged build quality and the full-frame capabilities in their next-gen CineAlta. The VENICE has a surprisingly compact design which allows easier shooting in confined spaces or on drones. The brand new “aspect ratio agnostic” Full-Frame CMOS sensor (6048 x 4032 / 3:2), which will support various resolutions from 6K all the way down to Full HD. The camera combines the newly developed 36x24mm full frame sensor where user-selectable areas of the sensor can be used. Venice can capture images up to a maximum resolution of 6048 x 4032 in full-frame, you can use the full 6048 pixel width of the sensor for widescreen or Large Format use.

Aydin Tolan, Head of Broadcast at Sony Professional Solutions MEA said to Digital Studio, "We believe this camera is very suitable for the requirements fo the region. It is engineered based on a user friendly menu, a very high level of picture quality, colour spectrum and is basically a robust and reliable tool for DoPs and directors."

Venice will have it's own different place in the Sony CineAlta line-up from the F65, which will remain as the flagship he explained. "They will both have their different place and one will not replace the other." Tolan added that while listening to customers in developing the Venice, Sony considered user friendliness, ease of workflows, robustness in terms of reliability and maintenance as the most important aspects.

Speaking of advances in resolution to 4K and now 6K, Tolan feels that resolution advances is not the only concern, when he speaks with the experts from the industry, "Resolutions is important but it's not everything. The majority of DoPs are concerned with picture quality, ease of use in workflows, reliability and ease in terms of portability, lightweight." He said the market would not appreciate engineering just for the sake of engineering, all other factors comes into play, so for Sony it is a more holistic approach to camera development."

Post-launch Sony will now focus on getting more feedback from the market. "We would like to continue doing demonstrations, test runs and shootings with our valuable end users. Listening to specific feedbacks of the region is more important than anything," he finished.
