Zamtel, an operator that is fully owned by the Zambian government, said that it had launched an LTE service in the city of Kitwe.

Zamtel said that it was staging a 4G Live Experiential Centre at its offices in the city, allowing customers to see LTE in action.

Zamtel hired Huawei to deploy the LTE network which is capable of offering speeds of about 50Mbps to customers.

Spawn Fan, managing director of Huawei in Zambia, said: “We are certain that the approach to adopt LTE, which is the latest mobile technology, highlights Zamtel’s commitment to provide more multimedia and better services to all Zambians.”

The launch follows closely from MTN Zambia's announcement that it had launched the country's first LTE network earlier in the monh.
