27mn Iranian cellular subscribers are without smartphones
Iran aims to boost broadband penetration in the next four years.

More than one-third of the country’s mobile users are still not using smartphones, according to Iran’s ICT Minister Azari Jahromi.

Tech Rasa cites him as saying that cellular market leader MCI has 18 million of its 50 million active subscribers without smartphone devices, while second-placed MTN Irancell has nine million of its 30 million users without a smartphone. The minister stated that operators are being encouraged to bundle smartphones with subscription packages to help reduce the reliance on older handsets.

Jahromi noted that 1,246 cities now have access to 3G and 4G mobile networks, offering 100% urban coverage. Coverage levels in rural areas stand at around 55%, however. The minister also said that the expansion of fibre-optic infrastructure is continuing apace, the country has managed to install 200,000 fibre-optic ports. According to they country's plans, this number will reach two million by the end of the year.
