The head of National Electronic Security Authority said the UAE is in talks with WhatsApp to work on removing the ban from the free calling service, according to reports.

Local UAE newspapers cite Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, executive director of the UAE’s National Electronic Security Authority (NESA), as saying that there is collaboration happening with WhatsApp and that the TRA is working on collaborating in the UAE. The TRA executive director is quoted as saying that the TRA saw a very good understanding of the WhatsApp calling concept and that there might be a lift of that ban for voice calls or broadcasting.

Currently, UAE residents can only access VoIP services as part of licensed service packages from Etisalat or Du.
