Bharti Airtel has won four out of the six network performance awards up for grabs in the latest edition of Opensignal’s industry report.

Airtel outperformed its rivals in the Best Video Experience, Fastest Download Speed, Best Voice App Experience and Latency Experience categories.

With India entering a protracted lockdown period as it responds to the global Covid 19 pandemic, the performance of the country’s mobile networks will be paramount in ensuring that hundreds of millions of people remain connected and are able to take part in work and study from home initiatives.

Airtel provided the best download speeds of any of India’s big four mobile network operators, clocking average speeds of 10.1 Mbps. It also scored highest in the Best Video Experience category, with users scoring it between 74-80 / 100 for video performance.

India’s mobile network operators have endured a torrid time in recent months, with telcos trading on wafer thin margins and average revenues per user (ARPU) hovering around the $1.50 mark. The industry weas also rocked by a Supreme Court ruling in October 2019 over the way telcos calculate their Adjusted Growth Revenues – a metric used to calculate the amount they owe to the government in spectrum charges. The ruling saddled the industry with tens of billions of dollars of debt, at a time when it could least afford it, meaning that all four of India’s big four operators have slashed capex and opex in recent months.

Opensignal’s report was compiled using data from 8 million devices, using 21 billion measurements across the subcontinent.
