Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) supported the signing of an agreement that would see the app-based car-booking service, Careem, operate in Sharjah.

Under the directives of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, chairperson of Shurooq, Sharjah Transport Solutions, the managing transportation unit of Shurooq Al Emarat, implemented the contract.

Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, chief executive officer of Shurooq and vice chairperson of Shurooq Al Emarat's board, signed the contract with Bassel Al Nahlaoui, the managing director of Careem's Gulf operation.

Al Sarkal said Careem's presence in Sharjah would help the authority meet its "smart mobility" ambitions, and offer "access to more transport options, particularly with a view to the massive expansion in entertainment and cultural events being organised across the emirate".

He added: "Signing the contract with Careem comes within the framework of ensuring that we are providing the modern and efficient systems that meet the aspirations of Sharjah’s residents.

"[The contract] also provides the highest standards of welfare and high-end services to residents, through a number of transport options, which furthers the integration of Sharjah’s transport network."

Commenting on the agreement, Muhammad Abdullah Al Jarman, chairperson of Shurooq Al Emarat's board, and general manager of Emirates Transport, added: "Sharjah has been experiencing steady growth in the number of its residents, tourists, and visitors, requiring us to meet the high demand for road transport services.

"We signed this agreement with Careem knowing that it has proved itself as a leading player in providing a safe transport system."
