The UAE's Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is now 87% complete, following the completion of its Unit 4's dome.
The dome was the final structural element that still needed to be built for the Reactor Containment Building (RCB), and its completion signifies the "majority completion" of main construction work at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.
Pipe welding works, and the setup of key equipment for Unit 4’s Reactor Coolant Loop (RCL), have also been completed.Developer Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) called the moment a “key milestone” in the construction of a power plant that will produce 5,600 mega-watt (MW) of energy once fully operational.
Chief executive officer of ENEC, Mohamed Al Hammadi, said the work highlighted “the significant progress being made in both the construction of Unit 4” and the “overall completion of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant”.
The dome is the final structural component of the concrete and reinforced steel RCB, which now stands at 70m tall.
Construction of Unit 4, the last unit of the nuclear energy plant, started in 2015 and work is now 67% complete, according to Hammadi. The next phase will see the unit move from construction to testing and commissioning.
Units 2 and 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, in Al Dhafrah, have completion rates of 92% and 81% respectively. Unit 1 was completed last month. It will now undergo a comprehensive review before it can start generating power.
Al Hammadi praised ENEC’s partnership with prime contractor and joint venture partner, Korea Electric Power Corporation, which he said had helped the project meet the construction milestones.
