Dhofar Generating Company is set to open the Salalah 2 Independent Power Plant (IPP) on Thursday, 8 March.
The 445MW power plant, valued at $623.4m (OMR240m), commenced commercial operations at the start of this year, bringing Dhofar Generating Company’s capacity to 718MW.
The company’s chief executive officer, Eng Naef bin Mohammad Al-Awaed, told Oman News Agency (ONA): “The Salalah 2 Independent Power Plant started its commercial operations on 1 January, 2018.”
He added that the company, which already operates a 273MW plant, is now the “largest producer of electricity in the Governorate of Dhofar”.
According to Al-Awaed, the company will sell power generated by the two plants to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWPC) under a 15-year power purchase agreement.
Dhofar Generating Company was acquired in 2015 by a consortium consisting of Mitsui, ACWA Power, and Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding, from Electricity Holding Company. The consortium was awarded the contract to build the Salalah 2 plant.
