The seven-year retrofit scheme for Dubai Airports’ facilities will focus on water and air systems, it has been revealed.
The retrofit programme will see energy efficiency measures implemented at Terminals 1, 2, and 3, and Concourse B at Dubai International Airport (DXB), as part of an agreement signed by Etihad ESCO and Dubai Airports in October 2017.
Those measures will involve the use of data analytics and smart building technologies from Siemens, and will produce annual energy savings of almost 20%, state-run Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.
The project is expected to bring down CO2emissions by approximately 25,000 tonnes, with annual electricity savings of approximately 50 gigawatt hours (GWH), and water savings of around 21 million gallons.
Siemens has customised an energy optimisation solution for the project, consisting of physical and digital technologies, including variable frequency drives, panels, sensors, intelligent controls, energy metering, and efficient water fixtures.
These technologies are reportedly designed to optimise air-handling units, chilled water systems, fresh air plant, and the secondary fresh air, supply and exhaust fan systems.
Michael Ibbitson, executive vice president for infrastructure and technology at Dubai Airports, commented: "Sustainability underpins our facility management strategy and these energy and water savings have the double benefit of limiting our environmental footprint and improving our bottom line.”
Meanwhile, Markus Strohmeier, senior executive vice president of building technologies at Siemens Middle East, added: "By optimising technical infrastructure at Dubai International [Airport] and providing enhanced control and data analytics, we are able to guarantee significant resource savings with sustainable environmental and financial benefits.
"We recognise that Dubai Airports operates mission-critical infrastructure, and we are committed to using technology and expertise to ensure it is functioning at its most efficient."
According to WAM, Siemens will be responsible for the project’s design, supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance, as well as the measurement, verification and guarantee of energy savings for the duration of the project.
