Argentinian footballer and Barcelona FC's superstar player Lionel Messi – who has won five Ballon d'Or awards for best football player globally and a record five European Golden Shoes (or Golden Boots) for scoring the most goals in a year – has made an appearance in his first Expo 2020 Dubai campaign video to underscore the key themes that are being driven by the development team behind the next six-month World Expo, which opens its doors on 20 October, 2020.
The 60-second film shows the footballer forging connections through "the universal language of football as they keep the Expo 2020 ball airborne through teamwork", Dubai Media Office, the emirate's official media outlet, reported.
The ad was shot in the UAE, India, the UK, and Kenya, and is focused on celebrating cultural diversity.
Commenting on his participation in Expo 2020 Dubai's campaign, Messi said: “A football team can only succeed by working together, and the same is true of humanity. When people from different nations, cultures and backgrounds come together we can better address global challenges and create a brighter future for generations to come.”
Messi, a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocate and Global Goodwill UNICEF ambassador, was appointed as an Expo 2020 Dubai global ambassador in 2016, and supports Expo 2020 Dubai’s vision to leave a lasting impact well past its 173-day event cycle.
As part of the initiative, Expo 2020 Dubai will give 2,020 durable footballs to children in Jordan, Kenya, and the Philippines, totalling 6,060 balls.
