Independent organisation Art Jameel has launched an international design competition for Hayy: Cinema, Saudi's first independent film cinema.

Open to architects and designers, the competition invites proposals that promote innovative ideas and creative approaches. Registration is open until 22 March, afterwhich applicants will be required to submit a proposal by 11 April.

The competition challenges applicants from around the world to deliver turnkey design proposals for a completely fitted cinema space, exploring benchmarks for sustainability and technological efficiency.

The cinema is planned for Hayy: Creative Hub in northern Jeddah, a 17,000m2 development set to laucnh in 2020 that will be home to the city's creative community.

Conceived by ibda design, the three story complex will offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional courtyard typology. The main central courtyard will be surrounded by shaded, staggered terraces on the building's upper levels, which serve as extensions of the courtyard space and allow it to be conceived as a spatial whole that connects every level of the project.

On its ground floor, the courtyard will be enhanced by seating among natural vegetation and greenery.

"Set to open in 2020, Hayy: Creative Hub aims to contribute to the Kingdom’s 2030 vision and its mandate in nurturing a thriving, diversified cultural scene and creative economy," said Antonia Carver, director of Art Jameel. "Art Jameel continues to grow as a collaborative model; we strive to work with artists, filmmakers and partners, both locally and internationally, to enhance and grow our shared objectives.”
