How long have you been in this role?
I’ve been a purchasing officer at Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara for two years. However, I have 21 years’ experience in hotels in various roles and transitioned into purchasing in 2005.
What specific products are you on the lookout for?
We oversee the purchasing of every item in the resort. One area would be the procurement of F&B products. As a rule, we try to support local suppliers for these types of products such as fresh produce, meat and fish. As a luxury resort known for our cuisine, it’s important to get the highest quality and freshest ingredients.
What challenges do you face?
Being in Salalah, the market is small with fewer suppliers; thus we need to sometimes look overseas, which can be challenging because of the clearances required in the different ports. One must be very organised, detail-oriented and have good planning and negotiation skills. We also have to be aggressive with follow-up to ensure that every stipulation is met along the way for a smooth and on-time delivery.
Tell us about one of your most successful deals?
It’s imperative that we strive to get good deals on all the items we procure as it’s a big part of contributing to the resort’s profitability. We always get at least three quotations from suppliers to compare pricing, but Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara is a five-star luxury resort so we also have very high standards. It’s all about balancing cost without compromising quality. Many of our items, such as our villa “wow” items and Electra Cruiser bicycles are bespoke and guests will only find them here or at other Anantara properties. The bicycles are a great example of an overseas item as they are high-end, comfortable for everyone to ride and can withstand the sun, salt, sand and rain of this climate, and they leave a great impression on the guests, making their stay more memorable.
What does a supplier have to do to impress you?
The suppliers that impress me most are proactive, honest and transparent. Those that can offer the highest quality items on a consistent basis. I have to work with suppliers that maintain enough stock and deliver on time as we are a fast-moving business and I don’t have time for mistakes.
