Salalah Rotana Resort in Oman recently inaugurated an organic garden on its premises. The new garden is part of the hotel’s corporate social responsibility towards embracing sustainable practices, a statement said.
An initiative developed to meet the needs of its daily operations, the garden occupies 500 square metre space and houses four types of produces including tomato, mint leaves, cucumber and radish. To facilitate the germination process, seeds were initially planted in a box and grown for 15 days after which they were transferred to the garden area.
Salalah Rotana Resort general manager Hossam Kamal said: “We are committed to creating initiatives that have positive impact on our environment. The garden amongst other actions depicts this. Not only will this garden service our kitchen operations, we anticipate it to serve as a cost saving initiative and encourage other hotels to do the same”.
The initiative, part of the hotel chain's wider sustainability efforts, Rotana Earth, has been developed to address environmental, economic and social issues. The resort has previously engaged in various CSR activities such as beach cleaning, fundraisers, inter school recycling competition, tree planting, distribution of iftar meals to labour workers during Ramadan, etc.
