Since Dubai cafés and F&B outlets were allowed to restart serving shisha on July 18, eight venues have been closed and 133 fined for violating health and safety standards.
Dubai Municipality revealed that the closures were related to failure to adhere to precautionary measures to confront COVID-19, the use of expired honeyed tobacco products, and allowing persons under 18 into venues.
Since the reopening, Dubai Municipality has made 1,228 inspection visits, resulting in a compliance rate of 89 percent, with the main issues being around failing to keep distance between people or distance between tables, as well as overcrowding in cafes.
Following the COVID-19 outbreak, cafes must also only use single-use shisha pipes, and the shisha must be washed and disinfected deeply, and the water must be changed after each user. It is also not allowed for employees to test the shisha before offering it to the customers.
As with restaurants, cafes serving shisha should ensure their employees are washing their hands before and after providing any service to customers, and to measure the temperature of employees, workers, and visitors, before entering the facility, with those showing temperatures above 37.5C not allowed to enter the site.
