The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global travel & tourism private sector, has announced its Global Summit has been postponed.

The 20th edition of the Summit was originally planned to take place in Cancun, Mexico from April 21 to 23. After consulting with the Government of Quintana Roo in Mexico, WTTC opted to move the event to the autumn period.

The Government of Quintana Roo and WTTC said the decision was made to give the travel & tourism sector time to recover from the current COVID-19 outbreak.

WTTC president & CEO Gloria Guevara explained: “We stand in solidarity with governments, countries and organisations which are being affected by COVID-19 and look forward to hosting our Global Summit in the autumn. This will provide a global platform to discuss the sector’s recovery and future plans.”

Governor of Quintana Roo Carlos Joaquin added: “Cancun and the State of Quintana Roo are continuing to plan a full schedule of events, meetings and conventions against the global backdrop of COVID-19. We have no COVID-19 cases but stand ready to support those around the world.”

WTTC released its roster of speakers for the Summit earlier in February. Among the speakers revealed were Dubai Airports International CEO Paul Griffiths, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) CEO Keith Barr and Hilton president and CEO Chris Nassetta.

Joaquin concluded: “We look forward to hosting the 20th WTTC Global Summit in the autumn and ensuring it is the most successful Global Summit ever”.
