Philipp John EconomouGeneral manager, InterContinental Fujairah. German national Phillip Economou was introduced to the art of hospitality during his formative years, building the foundation of his professional career. His passion for travel and hospitality led to an entry position working as a front office clerk at the Athenaeum InterContinental in Greece. Economou soon fully integrated himself into the InterContinental Group and set off on his next journey in Spain. Here, he was brought on board as assistant F&B manager in 2002, later attaining the position of F&B operations director at InterContinental Castellana. Economou rose to his next challenge at the InterContinental Carlton, France, where he worked for a full year before setting off to InterContinental Miami, USA, where he led the business to be recognised as the most profitable F&B operation across IHG North AmericaAfter this success, Economou moved to the Middle East for the first time, as general manager at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi and improved the hotels overall performance to achieve 10 out of 10 on Hotel Metrics 2014. Prior to his departure from the Holiday Inn, Economou led the growth of a new Japanese restaurant, Sushi Sun, from concept to development. In 2016, he attained the position of general manager at the InterContinental Fujairah Resort, where he brings 22 years of hospitality experience to the forefront.
Mohammed Mahmoud, Resort manager, InterContinental Fujairah. Mohammed Mahmoud, an Egyptian national, began his academic journey attaining a Bachelors degree in hotel management. He then started his career as management trainee at the Semiramis InterContinental Cairo and took on a new role as front office supervisor at the Pyramids Park InterContinental Cairo in 2001. Subsequently, he moved on to the InterContinental Riyadh, where he was promoted to front office duty manager in 2003. A year later, he made the move to the InterContinental Regency Bahrain as duty manager for three years and was later promoted to front office manager. In 2012, Mahmoud became director of rooms and quality continuous improvement. After being promoted to executive assistant manager in 2015, Mahmoud was in charge of the complete set-up of policies and procedures for total quality management aimed at improving guest satisfaction. In December 2016, Mahmoud joined the InterContinental Fujairah Resort.
Jan Hollunder, F&B director, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. A German national, Jan Hollunder successfully completed a diploma in Hotel Business, starting his culinary career at 22 at a five-star hotel in his hometown in Germany, starting as an apprentice. After three years of extensive training, Hollunder moved overseas to pursue a career at the Radisson Hotel Atlanta, USA, acting as assistant banquet manager. He moved back to Germany in 1999, where he became purchasing manager for the Four Seasons Hotel Berlin; he subsequently made his way to the Four Seasons Hotel Park Lane in London where he executed the role of the purchasing manager.In 2004, he seized the opportunity to assist in the opening of the Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma, Bahamas, before travelling to the Middle East where he began a new chapter in his life as F&B outlet manager.In 2013, he embarked on a new journey and took on the role of director of F&B at the Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel, which was then followed by two years at the Rocco Forte Assila Hotel in Saudi Arabia until 2016, after which he joined the InterContinental Fujairah Resort.
Jaehak Lee,Executive chef, InterContinental Fujairah. Jaehak Lee, a New Zealand national, embarked on a new role as senior chef de partie at the Sky City Hotel and Casino in Auckland. Here, he spent seven years directing the fine-dining restaurant. During his period at the Sky City Hotel, Lee also completed a traineeship at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Pierre Orsi. He has also travelled around France to learn more about the cuisine.In 2009, Lee journeyed to the United Arab Emirates, where he joined at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. During this time, Lee worked on a number of projects including catering for Gourmet Abu Dhabi 2011.In May of 2011, Lee was taken on as the second executive sous chef at InterContinental Phoenicia Beirut, where he was responsible for overseeing all daily kitchen operations and quality consistency and further lead the project of banquet menu standardisation and improvement. Subsequently, Lee took a position at InterContinental Hotel Abu Dhabi, where he led multiple award-winning restaurants, highlights included Whats On, Time Out and Fact Magazine.Lee joined the InterContinental Fujairah Resort as executive chef in December 2016.
Daryn Berriman, Director of recreation, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. Daryn Berriman, a South African national, began his career as the fitness manager at The Palace Hotel in Dubai, where he was in charge of all daily operations such as pool maintenance and the spa associates management. He was then promoted to the position of assistant spa and recreation manager within the span of a year. During this period, Berriman was responsible for creating the retail clothing line for the spa, conceptualising the sales training programmes and redesigning incentive processes for the teams. He subsequently moved to Raffles Hotels and Resorts in the Seychelles and took on the role of spa & recreation manager, where he was in charge of the direct operations of the spa, fitness centre and pool. Here, Berriman also developed and ran a successful resort kids programme before moving on to the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi as director of recreation. He spent four years managing all aspects of the sports and recreation operations at the property, developing a fitness and activities programme for hotel guests and members.Early 2017, Berriman started his latest position as director of recreation at the InterContinental Fujairah Resort.
Mohamed El Kot, Director of sales and marketing, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. Mohamed El Kot, originally from Egypt, gained a Bachelors degree in tourism and hotel management before beginning his career in hospitality. After his year at the association, El Kot moved on to the role of director of revenue management for IHG Cairo City Stars. At this establishment, he led the revenue management department for four brands and implemented various successful projects for the hotel. In 2015, El Kot oversaw revenue management functions for Hilton Worldwide in Saudi Arabia. Acting as regional senior revenue manager, he was responsible for the strategic planning of the KSA region, and also responsible for the MEA commercial team, ensuring hotels were delivering all targets successfully.Successively, El Kot joined Millennium Hotels Worldwide for one year as regional director of revenue, Middle East and Africa. At his time at Millennium Hotels, he managed 28 hotels and restructured the revenue management function across the hotels. In 2016, El Kot joined InterContinental Fujairah Resort bringing his years of experience to the team and managing the entire pre-opening commercial function for the luxury resort.
Nadim Bawab, Director of front office, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. A French national of Jordanian origin, Nadim Bawab laid the foundation of his career in hospitality by completing an MBA in International Hospitality Management from ESSEC Business School in Paris, graduating in 2010.He started his professional career at InterContinental Paris Le Grand in 2004 as night auditor, and was promoted to duty manager after two years. Throughout his journey in the 470-room Parisian landmark, Bawab acted as assistant director of food & beverage from 2010 until 2012, before moving to the position of front of house manager.In 2014, Bawab joined the pre-opening team at InterContinental Dubai Marina as director of guest services. Here, he assisted in the set up and recruitment of the guest services department. His responsibilities encompassed managing a multi-cultural team, creating quality initiatives and operational concepts for the hotel.Bawab joined InterContinental Fujairah Resort in April 2017 for his second opening in the region.
Syeda Aliya Zainab Kazmi, Director of human resources, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. Aliya Kazmi started her career in hospitality as training coordinator at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel. Within a year, she was promoted to assistant training manager. Rising up the ranks, she attained the position of training manager for the next three years. Following this, she spent two consecutive years as regional training manager of the Hashoo Group Hotels, where she developed and implemented learning initiatives in two Marriott Hotels and three Pearl Continental Hotels, formerly operated as InterContinental Hotels in Pakistan.Kazmi then became human resources manager of the Islamabad Marriott Hotel. After a year, she was promoted to director of human resources and was strongly involved in the implementation of Marriott Internationals Brand Standards Audits and Hotels Preparedness, overlooking recruitment, and development. She was human resources manager for Oxfam Great Britain for under a year before returning back to the hotel industry by taking the position of human resources manager at the Millennium Hotel, Sharjah. For three years she developed her understanding of the regions industry and spent the following year at the Renaissance Dubai Hotel. She subsequently moved to the Crowne Plaza Dubai Deira as human resources manager where she was promoted to the position of director of human resources, where she spent four years leading the department.Kazmi joined the InterContinental Fujairah in September 2016 and is now contributing to the overall success of the resort with her 23 years of experience.
Mini Tareen, Director of housekeeping, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. Mini Tareen began her career in hospitality by completing her diploma in hotel management, catering technology and applied nutrition from the IHM Goa. Moving forward, she joined the team one of the landmark properties of Taj Fort Aguada Beach Resort in Goa, India, as an industry trainee, she soon gained experience in all major departments of the hotel: front office, housekeeping and F&B.Subsequently, Tareen joined a part of pre-opening team of the first Marriott property in India and spent a year as the housekeeping supervisor there, administering all routine housekeeping processes. She began a new chapter in UAE with Four Points by Sheraton in Dubai as guest services agent for three years, gaining experience as a departmental trainer for the front office department and conducting routine front desk operations. While working there, she was promoted to acting assistant housekeeper where she assisted the executive housekeeper in day-to-day tasks for almost two years. In 2005, she joined the Sheraton Hotel Deira, Dubai, as assistant executive housekeeper where her role encompassed communication maintenance between housekeeping, the front office and engineering departments in order to ensure smooth operational processes. Two years later, Tareen took on a role at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi as assistant executive housekeeper to lead and organise the refurbishment of the entire hotel and lead departments operations. Following this, she joined the pre-opening and spent seven years in the role of executive housekeeper at the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi, becoming an essential part of the pre-opening team of and being awarded Manager of the Quarter in October 2009.She joined InterContinental Fujairah Resort in November 2016.
Tamer Sherif, Director of IT, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. An Egyptian national, Tamer Sherif began his career in hospitality at the Semiramis InterContinental as regional operation analyst. In 1999, he implemented and administered all internal systems as assistant system manager. In 2002, he moved to the InterContinental Resort Sharm El Sheikh as IT manager and was in charge of all IT systems while simultaneously acting as the FLS administrator for the hotel. Sherif also applied all operating systems at the Holiday Inn Downtown Kuwait where he spent three years as IT manager. Subsequently, he moved to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Residence in Dubai as IT director and managed IT and ELV for seven years in the hotel. Sherif overlooked all IT-related projects and managed the entire personnel within the department. In November 2016, Sherif made the move to the InterContinental Fujairah Resort.
Tushar Aranake, Director of engineering, InterContinental Fujairah Resort. Tushar Aranake holds a degree in marine engineering and started his career as a marine engineering officer at V Ships India. He successfully completed stringent audits in various parts of the world including with the US coast guard and Australian Maritime authorities. After six years, he pursued a career in hospitality with Taj Hotels and Resorts in Pune, India. He worked on multiple projects as deputy chief engineer and served as Green Globe coordinator to achieve certification for sustainable environmental policies. He played a pivotal role in handling the renovation of two floors and applied his sustainability research to the benefits of waste conversion. Following this role, Aranake spent two years between 2009 and 2011 at the InterContinental Hotel Group in Delhi as chief engineer. He was part of the opening team of two hotels and was crucial in implementing the design standards at Holiday Inn, Pune, followed by Crowne Plaza, Rohini, India. Subsequently, Aranake spent four years with Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, Agra and Bhubaneswar as chief engineer. Aranake joined InterContinental Hotels Group in Lagos as assistant director of engineering and was promoted to director of engineering at the InterContinental Fujairah Resort in October 2016.
