Uniper Energy DMCC has loaded in Fujairah the largest-ever cargo of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) for delivery to Asian customers ahead of the implementation of the IMO 2020 rule compelling all ship-owners to reduce the sulphur content of their bunker fuel.

Uniper Energy is part of the international energy company Uniper SE, listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with over 100 years of experience. Uniper Energy DMCC is an important vehicle in Uniper’s international efforts to help countries build up reliable and environmentally friendly energy supplies to support the global energy transition. UAE-based – with offices in Dubai – Uniper Energy DMCC owns and operates two crude processing units strategically located at the Port of Fujairah, the world’s second biggest bunkering hub.

“Stakeholders in the bunkering supply chain – refineries, ports, traders, shippers and more – are nearing a cliff of major change that they must adapt to quickly,” said Chris Wood, managing director of Uniper Energy DMCC.

As the UAE’s only emirate on the Arabian Sea coast, Fujairah is at the heart of the new energy corridor opening up East of Suez to Asia. The emirate is already established as a world-scale storage and bunkering centre alongside Rotterdam and Singapore and is set to benefit in the next few years from companies’ plans to expand crude and petroleum product facilities to avail of the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure on offer.

The largest-ever loading of LSFO on a vessel took place in Fujairah during 1-4 May and was 154,411 metric tonnes, without any issue stoppage, quantity, or quality loss, and the tanker is now enroute to Singapore. Shortly after, they commenced loading 80,000 metric tonnes to go to Europe, making it a busy month for LSFO shipments.

Uniper Energy’s crude units annually produce more than three million tonnes of ultra low-sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO) for the marine market. These cleaner fuels make a significant contribution to enhancing air quality, playing a crucial role in exceeding the International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets to limit sulphur in ships fuels to 0.5%, from today’s 3.5%, from the 1 January 2020. Uniper Energy DMCC supplies their clean fuels from their three million barrels of storage into three of world’s largest bunkering hubs – Fujairah, Europe’s ARA and Singapore.

The company started in Dubai in 2015, with the first cargo in March 2017. It now trades with more than 200 counterparties, both private and state-owned entities, including national oil companies.
