Breakbulk Operator of the Year was won by GAC Group at the Logistics Middle East Awards 2019, underscoring the high calibre of breakbulk projects it has been involved in.
GAC Group played a key support role in the works for the three pedestrian bridges over the new 3.2km long Dubai Canal.
The team was charged with import clearance and transportation for 48 heavy-lift packages weighing more than 5,000 tons and containing bridge panels and parts worth about 2.3 million Euros, from Jebel Ali Port to the bridge set-up site near Safa Park.
The entire operation had to be carried out overnight to avoid causing congestion with key challenges that included extremely tight deadlines and the need for regular route surveys to ensure that the planned route remained accessible and free of obstructions despite several ongoing roadworks and bridge constructions en-route.
According to Mario Coelho, general manager, freight at GAC Group, the success of the project is in large part thanks to the company’s long-standing involvement in the regional breakbulk sector.
“We’ve been active in Dubai for more than 50 years, and the wider Middle East for more than 60 years, so we have a very solid foundation that gives us immense credibility and experience,” he said.
“This is so important in the logistics sector and in breakbulk in particular,” Coelho added.
Looking ahead to 2020, he said that the market outlook was promising.
“Our outlook for the year ahead is very positive. With the amount of infrastructure development that’s happening in the UAE and wider region, there is tremendous potential in the market right now,” he said.
