Video footage has been shared on social media showing the oil tanker Front Altair in the aftermath of a major explosion and fire aboard the vessel that has been reported as an attack on merchant shipping.

UAE officials have not verified the authenticity of the video, but it fits with eye-witness accounts of the damage done to the ship, which was subsequently abandoned and left adrift.

Images taken by the crew aboard the vessel show the scale of the fire following the alledged attack.

The cargo ship Hyundai Dubai and the US Navy assisted the crew, with US naval officials contradicting Iranian reports that it’s navy had rescued all 44 crew members from both ships.

“We are aware of the reported attack on tankers in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. Naval Forces in the region received two separate distress calls at 6:12a.m. local time and a second one at 7:00 a.m.,” Joshua Frey of the Fifth Fleet said in a statement.

The second ship attacked was the Kokuka Courageous, but no images have been released of the ship since it was hit.

The ship management company for Kokuka Courageous, which was sailing from Saudi Arabia to Singapore with a cargo of methanol, said the vessel “has been damaged as a result of the suspected attack.”

“The hull has been breached above the water line on the starboard side,” Bernhard Schulte GmbH & Co KG said in a statement on its website. “All crew are reported safe and only one minor injury reported.”
