Kofukuji temple chief priest Bungen Oi holds a Sony's pet robot AIBO after a robots' funeral at the Kofukuji temple in Isumi, Chiba on April 26, 2018.
A funeral ceremony, complete with Buddhist monks, chanting and incense was held for 114 Aibo robots. Each robot wore a tag with the names of its owners on it.
The original model of Aibo was introduced in 1999, and Sony produced new versions up until 2006. In 2014 Sony stopped repairing broken down Aibos, leaving owners unsure what to do with their robot companions. The answer is the funeral service, held before the defunct Aibos are packed up and shipped off to be recycled for spare parts.
Sony introduced a new generation of Aibo at CES this year. It's the circle of life, etc etc
