Kuwait is taking a bold move to enhance smart grids by unveiling a major plan to replace old power meters with smart ones that are digitally driven.

Bids for the supply of 800,000 smart power readers will be invited early 2018, said Dr. Misha’a Al-Otaibi , electricity and water ministry assistant undersecretary for customers’ affairs.

In a statement to Alqabas newspaper, he said that the digital power meters have a technical feature to adapt to the Kuwaiti environment.

He said that a number of jobs would be scrapped once the smart equipment are installed, including employees in charge of reading the meters as data would be transferred to the ministry digitally.
